Purpose: To honor the heroism and memory of Private First Class Garfield M.
Langhorn, Riverhead native and recipient of the Congressional Medal of
Honor.

Award: A one-year, fully-paid membership to Maximus (currently valued at $450
each), to be awarded each June, to one male and one female from the
Junior class of Riverhead High School.

Who may apply: Any member of the Junior class of Riverhead High School.

Where to apply: Mail to or drop off at Maximus Health + Fitness, 126 East Main St., Riverhead, NY 11901.

Deadline: Applications are due by June 10.

Selection: Each of the memberships will be awarded to the student best exhibiting the qualities of strong character and dedication to others. Applicants should submit an essay that (i) tells a little about themselves, (ii) describes their personal reactions to, reflections on, and/or inspiration taken from the life of PFC Langhorn, and (iii) provides information regarding community service work performed, or any other actions or activities that demonstrate the qualities of strong character and dedication to others. The winners will be selected by Venetia Lewis, niece of PFC Langhorn.
